Our History
Watson-Mathews Funeral Home was founded in 1956 by Walter M. Mathews, Jr., whose dedication to funeral service and public care shaped the firm for decades. Mr. Mathews owned and operated the funeral home for forty years until his retirement in 1996. In addition to his work serving families, he also served as coroner of Macon County for many years, further strengthening the funeral home’s role within the community.
In 1969, the funeral home relocated to its current location, a distinctive Neoclassical residence built in the early 1900s for Charles J. Williamson. The home later belonged to the Hicks family before being converted into a funeral home. Today, the building remains one of Montezuma’s most recognizable and unique landmarks, continuing its legacy as a place of care, remembrance, and service.
