Thelma Vanzant Thompson

Thelma Vanzant Thompson, age 92, of Americus, Georgia, passed away on Monday, February 9, 2026.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2026 at 4pm at Watson-Mathews Funeral Home. Visitation will be held an hour prior to the service.

Thelma was born on October 5, 1933 to the late Henry and Rosa Lee Grimsley. She enjoyed fishing and cooking for her family. She was a member of New Liberty Baptist Church in Ellaville, Georgia.

Mrs. Thompson is survived by her children, Bernice Joane Hancock (Steve), along with her grandchildren Angela Garret, Stephanie Elliot, and Brandy Land; followed by her great grandchildren Paige Lamb, Courtney Lamb, James Garret, Maddie Garret, Mason Land, and Jaxson Land. She also had many step grandchildren and great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sisters Sara Lunsford, Bernice Powell, Jewell Grimsley, and one brother Cecil Grimsley

She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Rosa Grimsley; first husband, John Plemons Vanzant, second husband Leon Thompson; one brother Curtis Grimsley and two sisters Kristine Kirkland and Myrtice Mason, and two step children, Shirley Miller, and Inez Streetman.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Watson-Mathews Funeral Home in Montezuma, Georgia.
