George Ray Woodruff

Mr. George Ray Woodruff, born March 6, 1939, in Lilly, Georgia, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2026, surrounded by his family in Americus, Georgia. His life was marked by deep devotion to his family, his community, and the values he held dear.

From his beginnings in Lilly, George went on to build a lifetime defined by hard work, integrity, and generosity. He dedicated his professional years to the demanding work of a truck driver, from which he eventually retired with the respect of friends and colleagues alike. Even in retirement, George stayed active and engaged in the world around him.

Sports were one of George’s great passions. He made a lasting impact on his community by helping to establish the Macon County Recreation Department, where he coached numerous seasons, mentoring young athletes and fostering team spirit. His love for sports went back to his youth—a highlight being his time playing minor league baseball as a catcher with the Dixie Peaches at Luther Williams Field in Macon, Georgia.

George had a green thumb and a special talent for gardening. Tomatoes he grew were well known among family and friends for their taste and quality. For many years, he lent his presence and energy to Hardy Farms, selling peanuts at the roadside stand in Montezuma. Those who stopped by the stand not only enjoyed the delicious peanuts but also the warm greetings and good conversation.

Music was another of George’s cherished pursuits. He delighted in singing and shared his voice with others as part of a quartet. He was a member of Lilly Baptist Church in Dooly County.

Family was the core of George’s world. He was a loving father to his son, Andy (Dawn) Woodruff, and his daughters, Becky Woodruff, Teresa Neisler (Don) Byram, and Melody (Billy) Smith. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Nikki Mallard, Nick (Mary Elizabeth) Neisler, Cami (Josh) Jones, Joshua Smith, Caleb Smith, McCall Woodruff, and Bryson Woodruff. He also leaves behind a great-grandchild, Flint Jones, and his brother, Herman (Betty) Woodruff.

George’s memory is further cherished by those who preceded him in death, including his brothers Frank, Charlie Davis, JN, Danny Ray, and Harvey; and his sisters, Myrtle Hortman and Helen Etheridge Johnson. 

A visitation to honor George’s life will be held on Friday, July 24, 2026, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Watson-Mathews Funeral Home, 322 N Dooly St, Montezuma, GA. A private service will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 10 a.m. at Bertha Dozier Memorial Park Cemetery, 405 Walnut Street, Montezuma, GA.
