He was baptized in his youth and moved with his family to Montezuma, Georgia at the age of 18. He was a member of Montezuma Mennonite Church until his death. On October 24, 1963, he married Verna Mae Yoder of Montezuma, Georgia and enjoyed 62 years together.
He was an avid row crop farmer along with a hog operation in earlier years transitioning to cattle buying and later a cattle operation on the farm which was his favorite until his health no longer permitted it. Many friends were made over the years with these different occupations. He was a man of few words in a crowd but loved to talk and share things he grew in the garden or bought to share with friends one on one. In later years his lung condition confined him to limited activities. During his illness, his highlights included being surrounded by his family, visitors and especially small children. He was preceded in death by his brother, Earl Wingard; 2 sisters, Mary Ellen Wingard and Beulah (Wingard) Yoder; 2 daughter in laws, Twila (Plank) Wingard, Jill (Shrock) Wingard and one great granddaughter, Kenna Jade Schrock.
He is survived by his wife, Verna Mae (Yoder) Wingard of Montezuma; 7 children, Lamar Wingard of Montezuma, Loren Wingard of Washington, Indiana, Faron Wingard of Montezuma, Lyle Wingard, Don Wingard of Delta, Colorado, Kaylene Wingard Overholt of Montezuma and Heidi Wingard Wagler of Washington, Indiana. He is also survived by one sister, Emma Wingard Yoder of Montezuma, Georgia, 40 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.
