STONE MOUNTAIN, GEORGIA - Edwin L. McLendon passed peacefully and went home to the Lord during his sleep on August 17, 2023 at the age of 84 at Delmar Gardens of Gwinnet. Ed’s home was in Stone Mountain, Georgia for many years.
Ed grew up outside Oglethorpe, Georgia on a farm that he dearly loved. He attended Oglethorpe school system through all twelve grades. He excelled in sports including basketball and track. He was gifted with artistic abilities and the Eagle in the annual was done by him. Then, Ed was off to the University of Georgia where he earned a degree as a Landscape Architect. This allowed him to establish his own company in Tucker, Georgia and operated it for over 30 years. While at UGA, he met the love of his life, Harriet Hunter from Cairo, Georgia. They were married in Cairo on December 28, 1961. This year would have been their 62nd anniversary! Harriet has been by Ed’s side during some very difficult days in the last years of his life. She will have a crown in Heaven for her great care and loyalty to Ed.
During Ed’s life he had to fight through obstacles that few face. One was when he was 13 years old and was attacked by a rabid mule. He spent weeks in the hospital with a broken leg and had to take many shots to prevent rabies. This caused Ed to miss most of the Seventh grade and Miss Brice Perry taught Ed for free during the summer. Then Ed had jaundice!
Ed was a humorist and loved to tell true funny stories about his life experiences. The family recorded many of these stories and will cherish reading them in the coming years.
He was a true blue UGA super fan. Ed spent many hours watching UGA and cheering the bulldogs to victory.
Another love that Ed had was being with his family and cousins and staying on the family farm. He and Harriet spent a lot of time at the farm visiting relatives and attending McLendon Reunions.
Ed was a doer who could literally fix or repair just about anything. When he was physically able, he found joy working on home repairs, improving his lawn, and rebuilding the engine of his 1954 Ford pick up truck.
Ed and Harriet have been members of Mountain Park United Methodist Church for 50 years. Ed enjoyed their Sunday School class and he enjoyed the fellowship and activities of The United Methodist Men as long as he was physically able.
Ed and Harriet have one beloved daughter, Melanie McLendon Morrison (Jeff) and one grandson, Hunter, who held a special place in “Papa Ed’s” heart. Papa Ed felt that Hunter was the best and he did not need a second opinion!
In addition to his wife Harriet, daughter Melanie, and grandson Hunter, Edwin is survived by his siblings and sisters in law: Gloria McLendon Wurst (Jimmy), Sandra McLendon Perdomo (Robert), Steve McLendon (Sharon) and Ann Barfield McLendon. He has many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Ed was preceded in death by his Dad and Mother (Rodolph and Mary McLendon) and his oldest sibling, Gerald Allen McLendon.
Never one to complain, Ed modeled for all of us how to accept the challenges of declining health with grace and dignity. Ed’s final resting place will be next to his Mother and Dad in Oglethorpe Cemetery. He will be greatly missed.
