Edwin Myers McKenzie, III

Edwin Myers McKenzie III passed away on September 14th after a long battle with cancer, in the comfort of his home on Lake Lanier, surrounded by his family. A celebration of life will be held graveside at 2p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2026 at Felton Cemetery. 

Ed, or "Papa Ed" as he was affectionately known by his grandchildren, was a devoted husband, loving father, adoring grandfather, and an amazing brother, uncle, and friend. Most of all, Ed was a kind and gentle soul whose love left an imprint on everyone who knew him.

Ed was born and raised in Montezuma, Georgia—a small town that instilled values like loyalty and integrity in him early. He was a proud graduate and ATO fraternity member at Georgia Southern University, and he certainly wasn’t afraid to remind you of that.

Ed was a dedicated accountant with The Southern Company, where he worked from the day he graduated until the day he retired—a testament to his incredible sense of loyalty and commitment.

Ed was always present with his family; there was never a ball game, school play, or graduation that he missed. He was a kid at heart and loved finding ways to play tricks on his kids and grandkids. Say something funny or ridiculous in front of him, and you would see his trademarked smirk accompanied by a slight shake of his head.

Ed’s greatest joy—second only to fishing and football—was his family. He leaves behind his wife of 27 years, Patti McKenzie; his step-children (a term used here only for clarity, as Ed always introduced them simply as his daughters and son): Lacy Miller (Rick), Sydney Cossick (Adam), and Fabe Clements IV (Melissa); and his grandchildren: Cameron Miller, Britain Miller, McKinley Cossick, Brewer Cossick, Shepard Cossick, Olivia Clements, Eleanor Clements, Fabius Clements V, and Theodore Clements.

He is also survived by his sister, Marguerite McKenzie (Mike), and his nephews, Harris Gignilliat (Carla) and Stuart Gignilliat (Kasey).

We all find comfort in knowing that Ed is now at peace and with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Ed’s quiet strength, gentle spirit, loyalty, and love for his family will stay with us forever. He will be deeply missed.
