OGLETHORPE, GA - Mr. Dalton Harold Cannon, age 67, of Oglethorpe, Georgia, passed away May 9, 2017, at Memorial Health University in Savannah, Georgia. He was born July 7, 1949, in Montezuma, Georgia, to the late Dalton Lucas Cannon and Christine Gilbert Cannon. He served as the Chief of Police for the Oglethorpe Police Department for 31 years.
In addition to his many years of public service, "Chief" enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, making cane syrup, cooking fish, and raising livestock. He was also a licensed pilot. His favorite times, however, were spent at the creek with his family around him. He was a member of Travelers Rest Masonic Lodge #65. He served his country in the U.S. Army, Airborne Division for six years and was in the Army Reserves.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Whitewater Baptist Church in Oglethorpe, Georgia, with Reverend Mark Poole and Chaplain Tim Sizemore officiating. Burial will follow at Ideal City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2017, at Watson Mathews Funeral Home.
Survivors include his loving wife, Patsy Lynn Cannon of Oglethorpe, Georgia; a son and daughter-in-law: Wesley Cannon and Molena of Butler, Georgia; two daughters and sons-in-law: Julie Truman and Todd of Ideal, Georgia, and Ali Purdy and Will of Montezuma, Georgia; stepson and daughter-in-law: Bobby Holloway and Leigh of Ellaville; stepdaughter and son-in-law: Virginia House and Michael of Americus; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Charles and Joan Cannon of Montezuma, Georgia, and Larry and Cynthia Cannon of Ideal, Georgia; five grandchildren: Mikayla Cannon, Dalton Cannon, TJ Page, Bella House, and Cason Holloway; six nieces and nephews: Charlie Cannon, Jr. (Sherry), Jamey Cannon (Angela), Sydney Hughes (Bobby), Jeff Connelly (Michelle), David Recker (Alexa) and Nicole Marino (Michael).
